Masking, Burnout, and the Cost of Hiding Who You Are
Masking is the work of hiding your natural ways of being so you fit the expectations around you. It can be conscious or automatic, and for many neurodivergent people it starts so early that it doesn't feel like a choice — it feels like survival.
What masking actually costs
Masking is energy work. Suppressing stims, forcing eye contact, scripting small talk, monitoring how you're coming across, holding back the things that help you regulate — all of it spends energy you can't get back. Over years, that cost adds up to something heavy.
Masking helped you get through environments that weren't built for you. It also took a toll you were never meant to pay.
Burnout isn't a bad week
Autistic and ADHD burnout is a deeper state — profound exhaustion from the long, cumulative stress of navigating a world that doesn't fit your brain. It can come with a temporary loss of skills and capacity, and it doesn't resolve with a weekend off. Recognizing it for what it is matters, because the response isn't 'try harder.' The response is less demand, more rest, and real support.
Unmasking, carefully
Unmasking isn't an overnight switch, and it isn't safe everywhere all at once. It's a gradual process of learning what you actually need and where you can let it show — starting in the places that are yours: your home, your close relationships, your coaching space.
- Notice where you mask most, and what it's protecting
- Start with small permissions: stim, look away, take the break
- Find people who don't require the mask
- Let recovery be a real priority, not a reward for productivity
You don't have to earn rest
If you've been running on masked energy for a long time, the first move isn't to optimize — it's to let your system refuel. Coaching can help you build a life that asks less of the mask, at a pace that fits you.
